Why we started Effective Not Famous.
You don’t have to be famous to change someone’s world. Here is why we make Effective Not Famous, who is behind it, and what we hope you take from it.
Draft, not approved yet. Anything in [brackets] still needs to be written or checked.

After years of meeting incredible people from all walks of life, we realised so many meaningful stories never get told.
Some belong to well-known names. Others belong to people you have never heard of. What they share is a life, journey or perspective worth sharing. Effective Not Famous is where we sit down with them.
[Rutu and Jono, in their own words: the moment the idea for the show began, and what made them start. To be written by them.]
Impact over attention.
The show has one point of view: conversations with people who value impact over attention. A person’s contribution, lived experience and perspective make the story worth hearing.
Fame is neither the entry requirement nor a reason to exclude someone. The strength of the conversation comes first.
You don’t have to be famous to change someone’s world.
Who is behind it.
Effective Not Famous is hosted by Rutu King-Stubbs, founder of Hope Is My Homeboy, and produced by her husband, Jono King-Stubbs, here in Aotearoa New Zealand. We sit down with people whose stories deserve to be heard. Some you’ll recognise. Others might live down your street.
[A few words from Rutu on why she wanted to host these conversations, in her own words.]
What we get curious about.
We get curious about the stuff that shapes us: grief, faith, mental health, resilience, purpose, and finding the courage to keep going. What has life taught them? Who helped them through?
The conversations are human, honest and useful. They give you a reason to listen, something to reflect on, and something to take into your own life. We group them into four themes: lived experience, purpose and practice, leadership and creation, and community and contribution. Read about the four themes.
What we hope for.
Our mission is to share conversations that genuinely change the way people think. We want to become one of New Zealand’s most respected podcasts. And we want to celebrate people creating meaningful lives rather than famous ones.
Presented by Hope Is My Homeboy.
Effective Not Famous is presented by Hope Is My Homeboy, the suicide prevention and mental health brand Rutu founded, a brand built on hope with a simple message: You Are Enough. A distinct voice, a shared purpose. About the partnership.
